EMPOWERING LOCAL CRAFTMANSHIP: RM 60,000 GRANTS AWARDED TO 6 ARTISTS
Tourism Selangor awarded Local Artists to Strengthen Selangor’s Position as a Creative Industry Hub
SELANGOR, 28 MAY 2024 — Tourism Selangor, the Selangor State official Tourism Agency has once again demonstrated its commitment to fostering local talents by awarding grants to local artists and craftsmen. With a mission to position Selangor as the next creative industry hub, 6 artists have been awarded RM 10,000.00 grants each in a competition themed ‘Reka Lestari’, which aligns with the Circular Economy by the United Nations.
The winning artists and their projects include:
- Wayang Robot by Ahnaf Hakimi
- Scaling Up Scraps by Syiborisyd and Aruznadi
- Pagar 2π by Parti Design Awangan
- Deru Arus by Jamil Zakaria
- Dung Beetle—A Participatory ‘Dirt’ Exploration by Cheng Yen Peng
- The Light of All Things by Khabir Roslan.
These innovative projects will be showcased at the upcoming Tukang Festival, curated by Intan Rafiza Abu Bakar from the National Art Gallery. The Festival will take place at The Spine, PJKita in Petaling Jaya from 5th to 9th of June 2024. This event marks the second edition of Tukang Festival and is expected to attract over 8,000 visitors both domestically and internationally.
The Tukang Festival promises a vibrant array of interactive activities, including innovative exhibitions, art workshops, design talks, a pop-up art and craft bazaar and music performances. The Festival aims to not only display the incredible talents of local artists but also provide immersive experience in the world of art and crafts.
Tourism Selangor has long been at the forefront of promoting the state’s rich tourist attractions. The agency’s effort to develop Selangor into a Creative Industry Hub aligns seamlessly with the state’s domestic tourism campaign, “Nak Bercuti? Pusing Selangor Dulu!”. The innovative concepts presented by local artists have the potential to be transformed into tourism attractions spanning fashion, furniture, woodcraft and electronic assimilation.
The TUKANG—Design and Craft Festival 2024 organised by Tourism Selangor incollaboration with Rantai Art, will feature performances by local indie music bands including Daliliyana, Kingsley Chen, Lorita Nyepit, Ocean Astronaut and Amir Alif. Additionally, the festival will host various vendors offering food, coffee, snacks, pastries, arts and crafts.
Public is warmly invited to the TUKANG—Design and Craft Festival 2024 to engage with designers and craftpersons through workshops, talks and the art bazaar, ensuring an enriching experience for all visitors.
