SELANGOR SURPASSES THE TARGETED TOURIST INFLOW
Selangor Recorded over 6 Million Tourist Arrivals in 2023
SELANGOR, 6 May 2024 – The State of Selangor reaffirms its commitment to enhancing Selangor’s tourism sector as it strives to welcome 7 Million tourists during Visit Selangor Year in 2025. Building on recent successes, Selangor achieved a significant milestone in 2023 by attracting 6.54 million tourists. This achievement has set a robust foundation for future growth.
Of the total tourists influx, 4,449,951 million were domestic tourists, while 2,086,263 million came from international tourists. These figures, meticulously gathered by Tourism Selangor, align with the criteria set forth by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), defining tourists as individuals whose trips include an overnight stay. Leveraging methodologies used by Tourism Malaysia, Selangor’s data collection ensures accuracy and reliability in tracking tourism trends.
The remarkable influx of 6.54 million tourists in 2023 represents a 46.4% increase from the previous year, surpassing the targeted goal of 5 million tourists. This exceptional growth underscores Selangor’s appeal as a premier tourist destination and highlights the effectiveness of strategic initiatives aimed at promoting the state’s tourism segmentation from ecotourism, theme parks, food tourism, heritage and culture. China, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan and India remain the top five international tourist markets for Selangor, contributing 46% of the total international tourist arrivals. Similarly, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Perak, Pahang and Pulau Pinang remain the top domestic tourist market, comprising 36% of the total domestic tourist arrivals.
Moreover, among the 12 Local Municipal Councils in Selangor, Subang Jaya City Council has received the highest tourist influx welcoming 2.15 million tourists. Notably, the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council has recorded the highest increase with a staggering 358% rise, from 16,920 tourists in 2022 to 77,521 tourists in 2023. This has showcased the diverse and growing appeal of Selangor’s tourism offerings.
