Title sponsor Tourism Selangor aims to showcase Selangor as Malaysia’s leading golf tourism destination
BANGI, 17 JUNE 2019 – Selangor is set for another week of thrilling golfing action as the state prepares to welcome a plethora of amateur golfers from across the South East Asia (SEA) region and beyond for the 46th playing of the Selangor Amateur Open. Danau Golf Club – one of the state’s most challenging golf courses – will play host to the championship from July 4-7, 2019.
With a long-standing tradition as one of Malaysia’s leading amateur meets, the 54-hole championship is set to be further bolstered by the generous support of Tourism Selangor and will accord World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points – a boost for the region’s rising stars.
Sanctioned by the Malaysian Golf Association, the tournament will see some of the country’s up-and-coming players in the fray, including reigning national amateur champion Zia Izzuddeen Abdul Rashid, who will count on home course advantage to go all the way.
The Selangor Amateur Open provides Tourism Selangor with the perfect vehicle to promote the state as the leading golf tourism destination in Malaysia.
“We hope to leverage on our involvement with the Selangor Amateur Open and grow the awareness among the ASEAN golfing community on what Selangor has to offer as a golfing destination,” said Chairman of Standing Committees for Cultural and Tourism, Malay Tradition and Heritage of the Selangor State, Datuk Abdul Rashid bin Asari.
“Not only do we have world-class golf facilities, but we also possess the tourism infrastructure and the cultural heritage to complement the golfing experience,” he noted.
The Malaysian Golf Association believes that Selangor Amateur Open’s reputation as one of the leading events on the domestic amateur calendar is set to be enhanced by the support of Tourism Selangor.
“It is with eager anticipation that we await the start of the Selangor Amateur Open, which has attracted a solid field from across the region. We thank Tourism Selangor for their outstanding support and Danau Golf Club for their hard work and effort in preparing the course for this championship,” said MGA president Admiral (R) Tan Sri Dato’ Setia Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor.
Recently awarded the most challenging golf course in Malaysia by a leading golf publication, Danau Golf Club has left no stones unturned in preparing to stage its first significant amateur event since hosting the Malaysian Amateur Closed championship in 2010.
The championship track is beautifully landscaped around tree-lined rolling fairways and expansive waterways with its undulating terrain and lightning-quick TifEagle greens set to provide a stern test for the field.
“It is an absolute thrill for Danau Golf Club to host an elite field of amateur golfers at the Selangor Amateur Open and that is why we have been working hard to ensure everything is in place for the championship,” said Danau Golf Club manager Johan Fariz Salleh.
Tourism Selangor, in placing emphasis on sports and golf tourism, will organize Tourism Selangor Corporate Tournament 2019 where Danau Golf Club will once again play host to. The tournament which is set to take place on July 13th, 2019 is one of the initiatives taken by Tourism Selangor to gather its industry partners in a friendly but competitive setting of a golf tournament that fuels a promising and continuous collaboration in the future.
Sports and golf tourism is visioned to be one of the branches of the tourism industry in Selangor that poses a high potential to contribute to the economic growth in the State of Selangor. With a total of 46 golf courses across Selangor – which makes Selangor the State with the highest number of golf courses in Malaysia – the path is set clear, provided all initiatives are geared up simultaneously towards the same goal.
