MEDIA RELEASE
Lenggong, Perak, 25 September 2025 — The Selangor State Government, through Tourism Selangor, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lenggong Geopark, Perak, marking a significant step in Malaysia’s geopark collaboration and sustainable tourism development. The signing ceremony at Resort Tasik Raban, Lenggong was attended by government agencies, industry stakeholders and strategic partners.
The MoU reflects a shared commitment between Gombak Hulu Langat Geopark (GHLGp) and Lenggong Geopark (LGGp) to strengthen knowledge exchange, capacity building and community involvement in line with global geopark standards.
YB Dato’ Ng Suee Lim, Selangor’s EXCO for Local Government and Tourism underscored the state’s commitment to advancing tourism as a key economic driver.
“This collaboration is not just about sharing expertise but it is also about driving sustainable development that benefits the people. With Gombak Hulu Langat Geopark now gazetted as a National Geopark, Selangor has identified 31 geo-sites, of which 20 hold strong tourism potential. Our aspiration is clear, which is to position GHLGp as a UNESCO Global Geopark by 2028,” he said.
This initiative also supports Visit Selangor Year 2025 (VSY2025), which targets 8 million visitors, by promoting tourism products that are innovative, inclusive and sustainable.
Chua Yee Ling, the Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Selangor in a statement said, the MoU is a milestone in GHLGp’s journey towards international recognition. The path towards UNESCO Global Geopark status requires dedication, collaboration, and integrated strategies. Lenggong Geopark, now in its Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark phase after its evaluation in Chile, provides valuable experience for us to learn from.
“This partnership will create opportunities in staff exchanges, geo-guide training, academic workshops, seminars, research collaborations and more initiatives as we move forward,” she added.
Through this collaboration, both Selangor and Perak aim to pave the way for Gombak Hulu Langat Geopark and Lenggong Geopark to join the prestigious UNESCO Global Geopark network, strengthening Malaysia’s presence in global sustainable tourism.
